LIVE 'Secret Samadhi'
Album Re-Design - Experimental Image Making Processes
Swinburne University of Technology
The cover re-design is a limited edition of ‘Secret Samadhi’ by Live which was released in 1997. ‘Secret Samadhi’ is rife with spiritual and religious imagery. The album touches on human weakness, both physical and mental; about people being driven by greed and embracing it, indicating that it is human nature to reject purity. The word ‘Samadhi’ refers to a state of intense concentration achieved through meditation, in which union with the divine is reached. I wanted my design to represent the journey to this state of consciousness taking artistic inspiration from Alex Grey.
The album re-design consists of photographs and digital illustrations to create a semi realistic digital collage. The eye pattern was created with water colour textures in a rainbow pattern focusing on the colour of the chakras. The inner gate fold design represents the long journey one must go through to reach the divine state of Samadhi. The focal point is the man walking through his thoughts, almost reaching the divine, leaving the darkness behind. The glitch lines evoke movement as if he is walking through a metaphysical tunnel. The ghosted face images to the left symbolise the ability to step back from yourself and watch during these meditative states. The outer gate fold design represents achieving Samadhi, the death of the ego and seeing the world through a more pure state of mind. The man has reached this higher level of consciousness and we see him front on rather than behind. Together the gate folds tell a story and show two different perspectives. This is also reflected across the labels, representing the transition from dark to light.
This album re-design vastly different to the original cover. It is eye catching and intriguing. It truly shows the complexity of spiritual journeys and represents the key themes present throughout the album.
